I thought it was a great ride, too. As did Roz (age 13). I had no idea where I was most of the time. It made me realize what a nice thing pavement is — that is, to bike on.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Bike Newton public conversation

the ride was beautiful, and great fun, but physically challenging. it was not easy riding over all those fallen oak leaves, and there were many stops, barriers, etc. but everyone kept up the pace, and henry finch is enthusiastic, and he knows the territory extremely well. i hope he will repeat the ride in the spring.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Bike Newton public conversation

I love the velomobile! But it has the same problem for me that any recumbent has: visibility. It's down so low, I'd worry about not being visible in traffic. Another fantabulous dutch invention is the Whike: the wind-bike. Here's another you-tube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nmBbGhbJgU. It's a news broadcast in Dutch, but you'll get the gist.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Cycle Rikshaws

Similar to these cycling rickshaws are velomobiles — human-powered vehicles. They are a niche in parts of Europe such as the Netherlands, but are hardly seen here in the U.S. Most of them are recumbent reverse trikes with fiberglass hulls, which makes it possible to bike in inclement weather, and to carry cargo (like bags of groceries) securely. Models vary in price (but the fiberglass hull tends to make them costly) and features, including electric assist. I've been fascinated by the concept for a long time, but I don't think they mesh very well with general city driving in North America.

Here is one open-air model, in Iowa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XumrSMqOBVw&feature=related
Many more examples are available on youtube.com — just search for velomobile.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Cycle Rikshaws

Hey, Let's make it happen! Where and when should we meet? Sunday the 17th at City Hall? (Oh, wait… something else is happening that day…) No, but seriously. City Hall seems like a nice central starting point. Shall we just pick a weekend morning that works for the three of us, and then invite others aboard? The last weekend in May is the first open one for me, and then June 13-14 is the next open. Or weekdays, which would open up a lot more.

—Steve Runge

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Weekend Rides

Grove street would be a great connector between Lower Falls and Auburndale too. In fact, if the Riverside Development is required to have a dedicated ramp to 128, this opens up the possibility of shutting off Grove St connection to 128. This would transform Grove St. into a sleepy neighborhood road rather than the cut through commuter thoroughfare it currently is. There would be excellent opportunity for bike and pedestrian accomodations along this much quieter road. And the congestion around the Williams School and Lasell Neighborhood, all the way to Auburndale village, would be greatly lessened.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Biking to and from Lower Falls

Ideally, round-trip rides should be in the vicinity of 4-6 miles. The point of these rides is not to get a workout: it's to have a nice time, see Newton from the point of view of a bike, spend some time with like-minded people, perhaps stop for ice cream or coffee, and talk about where the roads work for us, and where they work against us.

The rides might be linear (start at point A, go to point B, and return to A) or convergent (several groups start at A, B, and C, meet at D, and all ride to E) or something else I haven't imagined. Where should we go?

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Weekend Rides

Thanks for the tip. When I have time, I'll go check out 16 in Lower Falls. I'm pretty new to Newton, so I don't know the bikeability of many areas outside of my home turf: Centre & Highlands.

Would the proposed rail trail improve connectivity for you? One of the possibilities is that it would go to Riverside. That route has some vocal opposition, though, from residents who abut the old rail right of way (DCR land). Other proposed routes by Amy Sangiolo follow the Charles, and don't provide a direct link to Riverside.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Biking to and from Lower Falls

Lower Falls is physically isolated from the rest of Newton due to I-95/Rt. 128, and this creates difficulties for bikers and non-bikers alike. Because the T does not cross to the western side of the highway, bikers who commute to the T must traverse treacherous car-oriented overpasses. Biking along Route 16 from Lower Falls to the Woodland T Station, for example, can be very dangerous and is an accident waiting to happen. The Route 16 bridge over I-95 lacks cross-walks for pedestrians, and is one of the most bike-unfriendly sections of road in the city. Route 16 has great potential for being bikable. It crosses the beautiful Charles River and links to many Wellesley bike trails. It also connects to various shops, parks, and colleges. If Newton is trying to decide which roads to upgrade to make more bike-friendly, the Route 16 bridge over I-95 should be at the top of the list.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Biking to and from Lower Falls

Friends of Northeastern University's Transportation Engineering program:

You are invited to the final presentations of the Class of 2009 senior design projects in transportation engineering, to be held Wednesday April 22, 6:30 pm, in 108 Snell Engineering Center. The students will present designs for four outstanding bikeways:

- a cycle track (separated bike path) along Boylston Street from Fenway to the Public Garden, and all the way around the Public Garden

- a cycle track parallel to the Harbor Commercial Street in the North End to Kneeland Street in Chinatown

- a cycle track from Melnea Cass Blvd. to UMass, via Southampton, Preble, Old Colony, and Morrissey Blvd (right past the Globe)

- a greenway along Lee / Clyde Streets in Brookline for walking and bicycling

Each design demonstrates the feasibility of "road diets" that make it possible to make roadways narrower, providing the space needed for traffic-separated bike paths — exactly what Boston most needs to promote bicycling and bicycle safety.

Peter Furth and Dan Dulaski
Faculty advisers

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Biking in the news

Hi Steve,

Thanks for replying.

I think much of the auto anger directed at cyclists is due to our ability to keep moving while they're stopped (either at a light, in traffic or both.) They see us "getting ahead" and they're frustrated. Add to that the frustration of them driving to or from work, picking up or dropping off the kids, errands, economic woes, etc. and it's not pretty. They resent the cyclist just because we're moving and they aren't.

A good friend and long time cycling commuter alerted me to the sanity of obeying the rules of the road years back. I rode with him and we stopped at all the red lights, stop signs, etc. He also taught be the verbal alerts cyclists use. I've been hooked ever since. Maybe that's what it takes: 1-on-1 work. (I've seen rules of the road ignored on so many charity rides that I stopped doing them. I signed up as a volunteer road safety rider one year in a multi-day ride only to see all of the "officials" blow through lights, ride 3-4 abreast on narrow roads, etc.)

I cringe every time I read about cycling injuries and deaths on the road. I had a close call Friday riding in the afternoon and it convinced me yet again that slower, safer riding is better for long term health than jumping ahead to beat a car or truck.

Cheers,

Greg Tutunjian

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Safe Cycling

We have to hold all of our elected officials' feet to the fire, and keep asking them when and how we're going to implement the recommendations of the Transportation Section of the Comprehensive Plan. (Click on Final Comprehensive Plan to download the pdf.) Most of the recommendations are bike and public transportation friendly, and would have, if they are ever implemented, profound effects on the future development of Newton.

One good place to start with the Comprehensive Plan would be to request that the City of Newton post the plan in a more prominent place than in a list on the planning department's page of reports. Given that it's a document that is supposed to shape all policy in Newton, it's a mighty hard document for residents to find. Bike Newton is doing what it can to make sure the sections pertaining to bikes, pedestrians, and public transportation stay in the foreground.

Forum category: Biking in Newton / Mayoral Candidates Transportation Forum, April 23
Forum thread: Re-thinking Transportation

I know. I bike commute from time to time into Boston from Newton via Beacon, and I stop at red lights. I'm in the minority. It's a rare day I see other bikers stop.

If you're going to change a cultural norm, though (and it's a cultural norm among bikers not to stop for lights), it might take more than laws and fines… though that's certainly part of the puzzle. MassBike recently helped push through legislation that should make enforcement a little easier. It also makes some bad car driving habits (not waiting for a safe chance to pass a bicyclist with sufficient room, for instance) subject to fines as well. We'll see, though. The passage of the bill heralded a lot of fanfare, but I haven't seen any tickets, yet. And I was cut off the other evening by a Newton police cruiser, so we're not reaping the fruits yet of the bike safety education for cops part of the bill.

Maybe some of the bike organizations need to get more vocal about the problem. What the redlightrunners don't seem to understand is that their behavior aggravates drivers, and makes them less likely to be accommodating for bikers. Biker A runs a red light, and bikers B, C & D reap the reward: a driver who'd like to run all bikers off the road.

That said, biker misbehaviors can't be held entirely responsible for poor driving behavior. (And running red lights, though quite risky, isn't among the top 10 safety problems.) There seems to be a lot of aggression directed at bikers, which I've wondered about for years. A bike can't really hurt anyone but its rider. (Lots of pedestrians get angry about bikers as well, and there wasn't a single pedestrian death attributable to a bike last year, while there were thousands of deaths attributable to cars. Why are pedestrians quick to anger about bikes?) If we take as an assumption that anger derives much of its fuel from a sense of threat, driver anger at bikes is an even greater mystery: if I slam full-speed into an Austin Mini, I might put a small dent in it. But driver anger is palpable. Do a google-search of "bicycle" + "accident," and not only will you retrieve a chilling number of news articles, but those news articles will be accompanied by a startling number of angry comments directed at bicyclists, even if the article is about cyclist who died when the driver was at fault.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Safe Cycling

EXACTLY. Glad to hear someone else note all of the issues I have ( Route 9, Needham street etc). I had to put my car in the shop this week but choose today b/c I had to go to Needham street yesterday and come home after dark. I knew I would not do so on a bike. Really too bad b/c I have a cargo bike and carting a food platter and ice and buckets etc was NOT my issue, it was the roads, conditions and cars etc.

I was on route 9 today and thinking about the stores etc that force ppl to drive there. I just got a gift certficate to Capital Grill. I would love to take pub transpo to it. But I won't ( nor would the husband) bike to the one off route 9. Not sure if my card is good for the one in town.

It makes me a bit sad. I lived until I was 30 to learn to drive. Then continued to be mostly carfree then moved to Newton and find trying to be carfree pretty impossible.

Forum category: Biking in Newton / Mayoral Candidates Transportation Forum, April 23
Forum thread: Re-thinking Transportation

I'm amazed daily and especially on weekends when I see all types of cyclists in Newton blow through red lights and stop signs, ride on the side walks, and ride the wrong way down streets. These cyclists range from "in kit" club cyclists to commuters, weekend riders and students. Full disclosure: When I'm out between 4:30am and 5:30am on a weekday morning and stopped at a red light, no vehicles in sight, I ride through the red light. (My excuse: I need to get home to get to work.) I'm especially keen on doing this in the cold weather. Otherwise I wait for the light. Every cyclist I've had ride up behind or towards me in recent memory rides through the light often around moving cars.

Today I saw a teen riding West on Washington Street to Walnut Street and pause at the light before crossing Walnut. She was on the sidewalk and dodging pedestrians. I counted 11 adult cyclists blowing through red lights this past Sunday morning between 9:30 and 11:00 am riding West from Newton to Natick Center and back. Several of these riders were together and all were riding high end bikes.

I'm all for traffic calming and bike lanes, but what about basic traffic laws? How do the improvements we're planning impact cycling safety and common sense (let alone citations?) You can bet motorists see you blow through those lights and fume. I think the police could issue tickets (not warnings) starting at $100 to start changing behavior. I'd support that. Nothing short of some stiff fines or carnage on the road will change this behavior.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Safe Cycling

What keeps me from getting on a bike?

Sometimes its a matter of convenience or time: I only have a few minutes to do something, so a car is the only option. Or I've got to lug lots of heavy groceries that won't fit on my bike and that I can't carry if I walk.

But a lot of times it's just the thought of the physical effort (I'm lazy) or the frequent hair-raising threats from cars. I really just don't like biking under the Winchester Street Route 9 overpass. It's dark, the road surface is terrible (potholes, patches, sand, gravel), and the roads are unmarked, making it difficult even to drive, so I know how little attention drivers are paying to bikes when there are other cars making sudden lefts to watch out for. Why does Route 9 have to be so impassable? I could cross at Woodland, where there's a pedestrian signal, but that's way out of the way. I could cross the pedestrian bridge at Eliot, but as they say in Maine, "you can't get there from here." The bridge at Parker is untenable, too.

For pedestrians and cyclists, Route 9 might as well be rolls of razor-wire. And while I'm at it, so is Needham Street.

Basically, it's all been designed with only cars in mind. Human beings getting themselves around on foot or on bikes are an afterthought. Re-thinking transportation means keeping humans-powered transport part of the road-use mix.

Forum category: Biking in Newton / Mayoral Candidates Transportation Forum, April 23
Forum thread: Re-thinking Transportation

I took a look at the comments on the article and was pleasantly surprised. (Usually, the comments on Globe articles get hijacked by the worst kind of reactionaries.) In this case, most commenters were much more sensible than the article, citing the economy, the lack of policing, and lack of non-mall stores as the principle problems. One writer (an urban planner) suggested Boston should encourage small, quirky businesses & more residential development to capitalize on the big college student presence.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Pedestrian Malls

At the Auburndale Library meeting on 2/25, Riverside developers stressed their commitment to containing the development from spillover
impacts to the neighboring community. They focused on isolating impacts from the community. We should go beyond an approach of
"containment" and instead ask what would DRAW the local community to this development, by foot, bike or bus. Someone at the meeting asked
"what's in it for the community?" A token comment was made about "pocket parks". This is a good start. How will pedestrians, families
with strollers, bikers get safely to these pocket parks? What role does the Charles River corridor and DCR bridges and pathways play?
The Developers touted their LEED credentials. Excellent! Can this development be a Green-themed Center - it is on the Green Line,
by the way. Can the buildings be LEED certified, with prominent solar panels? Can we involve Green Decade Coalition to advise the
developers on how to make this a Newton Showcase for sustainability? Can one of the pocket parks be an "energy playground" (energy
generating see saws, bike generators, etc.), as an educational demo for local students and families? How is a sustainability ethic
reflected in the treatment of traffic and parking? More pedestrian/ bike access from the local community means less cars needing to clog
the streets and parking lots. This is a win-win solution. - Nathan Phillips

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Riverside Development

The inside process of MBTA contract bidding were partially revealed by developers BH Normandy at the 2/25 public meeting in the Auburndale Community Library. According to developers Justin Krebs and Paul Ferriera, the batch of proposals that are considered by the MBTA to choose a winning firm are not much more than exercises. Once the winner is chosen, the proposal used to win the bid is pretty much discarded and the real planning process begins in earnest. The developers thus said not to take the specifications of square footage allocation in the media as firm numbers. - Nathan Phillips

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Riverside Development

Oh yay! a place for me to share blogs and videos.

First up is my favorite b/c it's based in boston. She mainly writes about Old bikes, biking with "style" and will snap photos of other commuters in the city while on her bike. I even snapped a picture of a Newton man on a bike by Shaws in newtonville. He was wearing a long camel coat on a freezing sunday afternoon. Very dapper.

Here she is: Chic Cyclist

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Bike Blogs & Sites

New Amsterdam project is a great idea, and I hope the company is doing well. I called them twice to ask them to participate in the Bike Newton Rally last May, although Newton is beyond the range of their operations. How do we help someone start a project like this here? Perhaps New Amsterdam project will consider participating in the 2nd Bike Newton Rally on May 17th, 2009 and give the concept more exposure and also generate more interest here.

Lois Levin

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Cycle Rikshaws

Hello. I just got an xtracycle this past October. I love it. One problem though is that there aren't a lot of Xtra owners on the East coast. The only dealers in Mass are on the Vineyard, in Salem and Great Barrington. My father lives in Great Barrington and checked out the Xtra there and it was not really test ridable. So it took me a long time and a lot of thinking and imagining before I bought it without being able to test ride.

I know there is another Xtra in newton b/c I saw it outside of Whole Foods at four corners the day before mine arrived. I thought we could connect, start some visability and perhaps provide test riding for anyone else interested. I'm rather short and my seat height is locked due to the baby seat, but I would welcome connecting with someone who wanted to see it or take it for a quick spin

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Xtracycle anyone?

Recumbent advantages offer many physical advantages over conventional diamond frame bikes, especially for those who have seen there youth start to fade away. Less stress on shoulders, neck, wrists, and easier on the derriere.
We almost had one in Newton, but it's relatively uncommon around here, especially small low-volume (mini) roundabouts which I think are extremely attractive in neighborhoods (and bike-friendly)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYQs3Mb8oJI

I guess there's one in Newton in front of the Brown middle school, but it only really services flow in two directions, so it's not as interesting.

Any traffic calming device that slows traffic to 20 mph should be good for cyclists. Perhaps it helps to think of bump-outs as parked cars which you can see through and won't open a door on you. ;-) I'd be very interested in design-tweaks to these devices to accomodate bicycles. I think I once saw one that allowed bicycles to ride over the device.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Traffic Calming and Roundabouts

Maybe we could get Peter Furth, Northeastern U. transportation engineer & Brookline bike advocate, to take Newton's new mayor to Amsterdam with his students to see how to create a livable city. Of course, the question arises: who foots the bill? Newton's not probably going to stomach paying for a junket… but it never hurts to dream. If we want vision, we need the mayor to see a place that's doing it right. OK, maybe there are places closer to home: Ann Arbor, for instance. But I'm not thinking of a "useful model." I'm thinking about inspiring a vision.

Forum category: Biking in Newton / Mayoral Candidates Transportation Forum, April 23
Forum thread: Send the New Mayor to Amsterdam

Idea: for storage, why look for a central space, when suburban Newton already has lots of basements and garages? How about a virtual library: people can opt in by "donating" a bike, which will stay onsite at their house until someone asks (through some kind of website/datatabase) to borrow it. In a sense, what they'd be donating would be the bike plus its storage. When someone borrows it, then the new person would be in charge of storage. All we'd do at bike newton is have a way of tracking the bikes' locations, by some kind of ID number. This would be for longer-term loans, obviously—a month or more, perhaps a whole season. When someone's done with a bike, they could just "check in" and we'd put an "available" tick mark next to it. It would be a great way to try a new style of bike without buying, and to move up to new sizes for kids. The benefits for participants: access to a variety of bikes, a way to clear out bikes no longer being used, and a way to be part of a sharing, trusting community.

Very little overhead or administration for bike newton: just a database, which would be pretty close to running itself, and some kind of labeling system. I think we could avoid liability by generating some kind of legal waiver, and by not owning the bikes: we'd just be a system for distributing them. Perhaps we could even work in some basic maintenance from time to time (e.g., oiling chains, patching tubes). Maybe at Newton Serves?

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Bike Sharing/Library ideas

There are many great ideas about designing a bike friendly Newton - like Helen Rittenberg's idea of a bike lane along the D branch of the Green Line from Riverside to Fenway. However, bringing great ideas to fruition requires help from someone with professional expertise and a genuine commitment to alternative transportation, evidenced by their own lifestyle and transportation choices. Newton could benefit greatly from a "green" professional civil engineer, specializing in transportation (Peter Furth of Northeastern U is a great example) to weigh in on the feasibility of alternative transportation ideas and how they could actually be pulled off. Bike Newton should try to find a volunteer professional transportation engineer in Newton who shares Bike Newton's goals.

Forum category: Biking in Newton / Mayoral Candidates Transportation Forum, April 23
Forum thread: Green transportation engineer for Newton?

The "splitter islands" seem really small in the Newton Center roundabout proposal: not big enough to slow traffic sufficiently, and not big enough for a pedestrian refuge. It's also two lanes, which makes things challenging for pedestrians and cyclists. But I'm no traffic engineer.

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Newton Center

An ultimate dream is to have a physical repository for this gear, but in the meantime, our nascent inventory 'floats' among bike newton members. I am in possession of the following for short term loan:

- Bike work stand
- 36 piece bike tool set (includes chain degreaser and other basic cleaning equipment)
- One Ortleib pannier that will fit most rear racks.

Contact me by posting to this web site or email me at ude.ub|nahtan#ude.ub|nahtan

- Nathan Phillips

Forum category: Bike Newton Conversation / Open Forum
Forum thread: Bike Newton Loaner Gear
